Question: Does sea salt have less sodium than regular table salt?

Answer: Regular salt and sea salt come from different places, but by the time they make it to the table, they are nearly identical in chemical makeup. All salt originates in the ocean, which has covered different parts of the earth over time. But because some ancient seas have dried up and become covered with sediment, there are now salt deposits beneath the earth's surface.

Most sea salts are unrefined and therefore contain slightly less sodium and more trace minerals than table salts. Some producers of sea salt claim that their products contain up to 60% less sodium than other salts. However, their products, although derived from sea water, should be considered "mineral salts", something rather different from traditional sea salts.
