The saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia) is known by many names. You may know it as the serviceberry, shadberry, or juneberry, but no matter what you call it, this delectable edible blueberry-like fruit is delicious!
A true North American native, the saskatoon grows from Alaska across most of western Canada and down into the western and north central United States.
With a sweet nutty taste, the fruits have long been eaten by Canada's Aboriginal people, fresh or dried. They are well known as an ingredient in pemmican, a preparation of dried meat to which saskatoon berries are added as flavour and preservative. They are also often used in pies, jam, wines, cider, beers and sugar-infused berries similar to dried cranberries used for cereals, trail mix and snack foods.
The saskatoon was an important food source for wildlife, indigenous peoples and the early pioneers, especially during the winter season. Today, saskatoons are still highly prized for making desserts and sauces, much like the blueberries or huckleberries which they closely resemble.
