Question: How can I identify wild mushrooms?

Answer: While there are a number of guidebooks on the market these days, you should always hunt mushrooms in the company of an experienced forager.

It is imperative that you are absolutely certain of the identity of any mushroom that you plan to eat. Many nonpoisonous and poisonous mushrooms are difficult to tell apart. Dozens of people die or are severely affected each year from mushroom poisoning.
It is also important to remember that most mushroom poisons are not destroyed or deactivated by cooking, canning, freezing, drying, or other means of food preparation.
