Ciambella Pastry

Ciambella Pastry
Though it's not challenging, this classic Italian pastry recipe does require some fussing, and is typically reserved for a special occasion. Ciambella pastries are baked first, then drenched in sweetened grapes. Top with chestnut cream if you really need to gild the lily!
Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pats
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 cup milk
Red Grapes in Syrup (Click text for recipe)
1/2 cup confectioner's sugar

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Butter a cookie sheet.

Combine the flour, sugar, and baking powder in a food processor. Pulse to blend. Add the butter patties and continue pulsing until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Use a separate bowl to beat the egg, the almond extract, and the milk. Beat until smooth.

With the food processor running, add the liquid to the dough mixture. Blend for about 15 seconds or so, or just until the dough forms a ball.

Transfer the dough to a floured cutting board. Shape into a "log" about 14 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Place the log onto a baking pan and form it into a circle in the center of the pan.

Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until it's a light golden brown. Remove it from the oven and transfer to a rack. Cool.

Cut the cake into one inch thick slices. Top each slice with a tablespoon of the sweetened grapes.

Dust with confectioner's sugar and serve immediately.
