Grand Prize Winner - "Whidbey Island Treasures"
"I found these little treasures while hiking on Whidbey Island in Washington while visiting my cousin-in-law in early May. Before the trip, I e-mailed him to ask what kind of mushrooms we might find around there that time of year. He informed me that there were no mushrooms around that time of year.
Well, the first day I was visiting them he and his wife let me borrow a hiking stick and took me hiking. As I was walking along the trail that went up a hill, I looked down as I almost speared one of these mushrooms with the walking stick. "Morels," I shouted! "No mushrooms this time of year, eh?" My cousin fell to his knees as if to worship the tiny treasures.
Looking around, we discovered that there had been a very small burn there recently. Looking up the hill, we found a few more...but that was all. Just enough for an appetizer...and were they delicious!"
