Though the tart, juicy fruit are small, mature shrubs bear them abundantly. Birds are attracted by the ripe fruit and subsequently scatter the seeds. As a result, wild plants are found growing throughout the Eastern U.S. where shrubs are commonly found along roadsides and fencerows.
Long revered as a powerful medicine in its native Asia, it is still utilized in the diets of Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese in tea, wine, jam and traditional medicine.

USDA researchers recently discovered that the fruit contain exceptionally high amounts of the powerful antioxidant lycopene, an important phytonutrient, thought to prevent or fight cancer of the prostate, mouth, throat and skin, and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
